Earnings
GP salary in Australia, explained honestly
There is no single Australian GP salary, and anyone quoting one is guessing. What there is, is a fairly simple set of levers. Once you understand them you can work out what a specific role is likely to be worth to you.
Why there is no national figure
Most Australian GPs are not employees. They are independent contractors who bill Medicare and their patients, and pay the practice a service fee for the infrastructure around them. That means income is not set by a pay scale. It is the product of how much you bill and what it costs you to bill it.
Two GPs in the same city, working the same number of hours, can end up a long way apart. Usually the difference is patient demand, billing model and item mix rather than talent or effort.
The eight things that actually decide your income
Your billings
Almost every GP in Australia works as an independent contractor and earns a share of what they bill, not a salary. Billings are the starting point for everything else.
The service fee
The practice retains a percentage of your billings for rooms, staff, equipment and administration. A few percentage points either way changes your income meaningfully over a year.
Billing model
Bulk billing, mixed billing and private billing produce very different revenue per consultation. Private and mixed billing usually earn more per patient, but rely on a patient base willing to pay a gap.
Patient demand
A full book is the single biggest factor early on. A well-run practice in an under-serviced area can fill a new GP's list far faster than a quiet one in a saturated suburb.
Hours and sessions
Sessions per week, session length and whether you do any after-hours or weekend work all move the total. Many GPs deliberately trade income for time.
Item mix
Longer consultations, chronic disease management, skin work, procedural work and health assessments attract different rebates. Two GPs with identical hours can bill quite differently.
Location
Rural and regional practices frequently offer stronger earnings, plus incentives that do not exist in the metro market. City roles trade some of that for convenience.
Practice structure
Ownership, corporate group, partnership or associate arrangements each change your costs, your autonomy and sometimes your upside.
How to work out what a role is worth
Ask the practice four questions and you will know more than most job adverts will ever tell you. What do current GPs typically bill per session? What is the service fee? How long does it take a new GP to fill their book here? What is the billing model, and is it changing?
Any practice that is comfortable answering those is usually a reasonable place to work. Any practice that will not is telling you something too. Our interview guide covers the rest of what to ask.
If you trained overseas
The economics are the same, but your registration pathway and any Medicare provider number restrictions will influence where you can work, which in turn influences earnings. Start with the Australian GP Pathway Guide and our Move to Australia guides.
