UK GPs moving to Australia

More UK GPs are looking at Australia than at any point we can remember. Usually it is not about money. It is about time with patients, weather, and a working week that leaves something behind.

Where UK GPs usually start

If you hold MRCGP and are on the GMC GP Register, you are generally in a strong position. Australian registration is handled by the Medical Board of Australia through Ahpra, and specialist recognition in general practice sits with the RACGP or ACRRM. In recent years the regulators have introduced faster routes for doctors from comparable health systems, including the UK. Eligibility criteria and processing times change, so treat anything you read online, including this page, as background rather than advice, and confirm your own position with Ahpra and the relevant college.

You will also need a visa, and most GPs come through employer sponsored or skilled routes. Visa settings are set by the Department of Home Affairs and are reviewed regularly. Our visa overview gives you the shape of it, and a registered migration agent can advise on your circumstances.

A realistic timeline

Most UK GPs we work with plan on somewhere between six and twelve months from first serious conversation to first day in a practice. Some move faster. Document gathering, primary source verification, college assessment and visa processing are the usual pinch points, and they run partly in parallel rather than strictly one after another. Starting your paperwork early is the one thing that reliably shortens it.

What changes about the work

Consultations

Standard appointments are usually longer than a UK ten minute slot, and you decide how long to spend. Most UK GPs describe this as the single biggest quality of life change.

Continuity

You keep your own patient list in most practices, and you see the results of your own decisions rather than passing them on.

Income

You bill rather than draw a salary, so earnings track your billings, your service fee and your hours. Our earnings guide explains the mechanics.

Admin

There is paperwork here too, but the QOF-style target burden does not exist in the same form. Practice quality still varies, so ask.

For the money side, read how GP earnings work in Australia. For where you might live, the GP Lifestyle Match takes a couple of minutes.

Bringing your family

This is usually the part that decides whether a move sticks. Partner employment, schooling, housing costs and how far you are from an airport that gets you home matter more than the job description. We would rather talk about that early than place someone who leaves in a year. Our relocation guide covers the practical side.
